What is Orienteering?

Orienteering is the sport of navigation, using a highly detailed map. Whether you’re an experienced hiker, competitive runner, or just a family or group out for an activity in a park, this sport helps you improve your navigation each time. Orienteering can gradually build your map-reading skills from exploring a local city park full of obvious structures to navigating remote terrain with few, if any, man-made features.

Who is it for?

If you like exploring new places, getting off the beaten track, enjoy looking at maps or simply want to add variety to a run or walk then orienteering could be for you. It doesn’t matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can choose a course to suit you and go at your own pace. If you are interested in TrailO, a form of orienteering competition where people of all levels of physical ability, including wheelchair users, can compete on equal terms,

Where can you do it?

Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban areas, parks and school playgrounds. Each different terrain offers a new challenge, and when combined with changes of seasons and weather, it is said that no two orienteering races are the same.

Where can I go orienteering?

Orienteering can take place anywhere from the streets of Central London to the wilds of the Scottish Highlands and everywhere in between including forests, parks, moorland, town centres, school playgrounds, and university campuses.
